SUMMERTIME IS BIKE TIME!

Christ Community Chapel is highlighting ministry partner South Street Ministries during the month of August. We are excited to support the South Street Bike Shop, and ask members and non-members alike to consider helping too!  Here's how it works:

Donate a used bicycle to South Street's Bike Shop.  Kids of all ages from the neighborhood come and earn their bike by working a set number of hours, depending on their age.  They learn how to fix a brake-line, repair a flat tire, etc.  Once their hours of on-the-job training are complete, they go home with their bicycle!

Christ Community Chapel is joining other area churches in collecting used bikes and we are excited to see how many members and friends will join the effort.  Simply bring your bike to the back side of the Hudson campus, where there is a trailer parked near the rear entrance to the kitchen. Leave your bike inside the trailer, and we will see that it is delivered to South Street!

If you don't have a bike to donate but would still like to help, you can give a financial donation and drop it off at the church office reception desk on Monday through Thursday 8:30-4:30 or Friday 8:30-noon. Make sure your envelope is clearly marked for SOUTH STREET BIKE SHOP.

Rahab's Block Party was a Blockbuster Success!

”The heart of RAHAB ministries is compassion. “We come alongside women who are trapped in the life-and-death struggle of prostitution and drugs. Then we stay. We refuse to see them as different from ourselves, and then Christ’s love for them can flow through us.” --Becky Moreland, Rahab Ministries Founder

Christ Community Chapel loves to support Rahab Ministries! And the love just keeps on pouring out!

This month Rahab hosted a block party on Matthews Street in Akron, where the Rahab house is located, as an outreach to their neighbors.  There was plenty of food, dancing in the street, and more than enough fun and games to go around!

Many thanks to everyone who volunteered their time, money, and talents to make this event another huge success. Reaching out to neighbors, making new friends, and serving others, and sharing the love of Jesus...that's what Rahab Ministries is all about.

RAHAB ~ A ministry of hope

Our Simple Opportunities to Serve (SOS) focus this month shines the light on RAHAB Ministries. RAHAB's mission is to break the chains of sexual slavery that is happening right here on our own streets, not just overseas.  Founded in 2002, RAHAB is a non-profit Christian ministry of volunteers devoted to rescuing and restoring women who are trafficked into prostitution in Akron, Ohio.

The outreach ministry of RAHAB is actually three dimensional.  It seeks to RESCUE, RESTORE, and EDUCATE, all the while conveying the message of hope ~ that God has a victorious plan for their lives, and to offer spiritual and practical opportunities for change.

Do You have compassion for others?  Ready to be changed by the experience of ministering to the suffering?  Many people with various talents and passions are needed for RAHAB Ministries to continue reaching hurting women.  Individuals and groups are encouraged to donate their time, talents, and finances.  some volunteers work directly with the women, while others serve behind the scenes, such as praying, organizing fund raisers, preparing food, or making table favors for the women.

To learn more about RAHAB Ministries, go to their website (www.rahab-ministries.org) and also follow these blog posts during the month of July.  Here are a few ways to begin getting involved with this amazing outreach ministry:

PRAY:  When you sign up to be a prayer warrior for RAHAB Ministries, you will receive a monthly email with three prayer requests or praises.  You can sign up by contacting Barbara Ammirati at barbara.ammirati@ccchapel.com.

SERVE: An annual block party/picnic will be held on July 19 for residents who live near the Rahab House on Matthews Street. If you are interested in helping with set up and/or serving at this event, contact Jacque Stager at Jacque481@aol.com.

GIVE: There is an ongoing need for freezer ready meals, cookies, bookmarks, cards of encouragement, and table favors to bless the women who come to weekly Bible studies at the Rahab house.  Full size toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, feminine products, lotions, etc. as well as seasonally appropriate clothing and accessories are always needed.  If you desire to contribute any of these or have questions, contact Jacque Stager at Jacque481@aol.com.

CCC's "Just in time" delivery to Rahab Ministries

In the 9th chapter of the book of Daniel there is a passage that says "...as soon as you began to pray, an answer was given..." God hears the prayers of His people and many times He chooses to answer them swiftly according to our needs.

This week when the monthly delivery of donated meals was made to Rahab Ministries, there was an unusually large amount of toiletries that had been donated by members and friends of Christ Community Chapel.  When the items were received by house mom, LeAnn, she was thrilled, and said their personal hygiene cupboard was practically empty.  We weren't even aware there was a special need, but God was!

Shelves nearly depleted
Shelves restocked!
Thanks to all who keep this ministry in your minds and on your hearts all month long. Thanks to all who so generously give from their substance and not just from their excess!

Grateful also for the delicious meals, once again the recipients left CCC a sheet of paper with notes of thanks:

"I want to thank you for the blessings I receive for everything you have done for me" ~ Monica"

You ladies make me feel so special. Learning more about the Bible was so intriguing" ~ Barbara

"Your food is always amazing! It is truly amazing that you ladies take time out of your busy lives so that we may have a great day!" ~ Catlin

and about a dozen more similar comments!

Enjoying our casseroles this week!

"knock and the door will be opened to you..."

We recently asked our local outreach partner, Rahab Ministries, if they had any special needs.  We were presented with their desire to have a matching set of dishes to use for the meals they serve while doing ministry, thinking how wonderful it would be to bless the women with a beautiful table, as well as the delicious food our volunteers provide each month. They needed service for 16, and they asked for Corelle dishes because they are light weight and wouldn't over burden their old and weak cupboard shelves.

We no sooner presented the need, and a donor came forward with the desire to bless the ministry in this way.  Not only did she provide the matching dishes, she blessed them with matching glasses and matching stainless steel tableware!

But wait! There's more!  Our donor has never been to the Rahab House and had no way of knowing the colors of the interior are blue and green. But God is in the details and have a closer look:

LeAnn, the new Rahab house mom, was overjoyed to receive this gift of love when it was delivered today.  The women will have a huge surprise tomorrow when they sit down to a hot meal served on these beautiful dishes, with matching glasses, and tableware!

We can't thank our fabulous cooks and bakers enough who donate soups, casseroles, cookies and breads each month to the Rahab House. LeAnn told us that just YESTERDAY they used their very last casserole from the freezer, and now they are loaded up again for another month.

And then she had a surprise for us! A beautiful thank you card from the women!

Here are some of the things they wrote:

"God bless all who make time to prepare the amazing food you send over for us ladies. I really appreciate your time and love you put into it."

"Thank you for your kindness, time, and abundant love. You've made my day a lot brighter~we appreciate you!"

"I want to say thank you and God bless all of you amazing women for letting us ladies have a wonderful meal and let us remember how the Lord Jesus Christ works through our hearts to care and love all of us no matter what any of us has done wrong in our life. God bless and thank you."

"Thank you for all you've done and continue to do for us ladies. God bless you all."

Urban Vision Volunteering Opportunities

Urban Vision continues to reach out to one at-risk child at a time on behalf of Christ in Akron’s North Hill area.  Urban Vision is constructing a bicycle Pump Track (for more on the UV track, see: http://pumptrackproject.com/ ), which is a magnet for kids. Recently, three local kids came to ride on the bike track, and stayed to hear Urban Vision’s message. They heard the Gospel in a small group. As one observer said, "They came with bicycles, and left with Bibles." Please pray for Urban Vision’s work in the city.

However, helping our neighbors in need through Urban Vision is not limited to those with carpentry or speaking skills.

If you love to cook, please consider opportunities to help Urban Vision with meals for local kids. Urban Vision (UV) serves more than 890 meals per week as part of its ministry. Please click on the following link if you’re interested in learning more about preparing either full meals, or portions of meals, or serving for UV programs and events:

Urban Vision Christmas Store: Christmas with Dignity, Kids with a Future

'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.
Matthew 25:40

The annual Urban Vision (UV) Christmas Store event took place on December 15th. It was an opportunity for UV kids to spend the UV dollars they have earned during 2012 through successful participation in programs helping them in everything from improving their school grades to earning the right to become leaders at UV.
Urban Vision seeks to give North Akron kids a Christ-honoring alternative to life on the street. Currently, there are about 200 kids in various UV programs, and there is typically a waiting list of about 60 at-risk children hoping to be lifted up, challenged to personal growth, and rewarded for personal achievements. Urban Vision is reaching the community for Christ, one child and one family at a time.

UV’s programs, such as Set on Success, provide kids the chance to improve their grades in school through tutoring and mentoring. When the kids hit key goals, they are rewarded with UV dollars, a currency that they can save up and spend on Christmas gifts for their families. The kids also learn valuable life lessons, since the UV dollar incomes are taxed, saved in a UV bank, and budgeted against the child’s Christmas shopping list.
This year, a Christ Community Chapel Christian Leadership Concepts (CLC) men’s group decided to make their service project helping UV with the Christmas Store. The store project depends on UV staff and countless volunteers who set up a physical department store, complete with priced merchandise, sales clerks, customer shopping assistants, gift wrappers, inventory keepers and others who enable the kids to experience the real world process of earning money, budgeting for Christmas giving, buying the goods and giving them to loved ones. UV insists that providing the kids with “a hand up, not a hand out” is key to their catching a vision of a productive future for themselves, with Christ-honoring coaching and counseling along the way.

Christmas Store volunteers arrived at Urban Vision around 7:00 AM on December 15th, and were treated to a light breakfast, a time of worship, some training and guidance encouraging them to think of the kids as their own, since they belong to our God. Gifts available for the kids to purchase ranged from snow scrapers to bicycles and televisions. It was amazing to see these inner city young people comparison shopping, weighing the merits of different items, making selections, paying money from their UV “wallets”, collecting change, and moving among the various departments. The UV Store included departments for toddlers, kids, men and women, with merchandise from deodorant to overcoats. The store alone, with its logistical requirements, is a huge testimony to the love and dedication of the UV staff and volunteers.

Christ is clearly doing a great work in preparing the Urban Vision kids for adulthood. While UV did not encourage discounting (why devalue the rewards for their achievement?), the sales people had a great time explaining the value of items at different price points. The kids spent their money very wisely, with a great sense of Christmas cheer, amazing energy and good humor.
As is the case so often, the CLC group members came to be a blessing to others in the name of Christ.  However, the men also were greatly blessed by seeing the fruit of the Spirit in these amazing young UV shoppers.  Urban Vision is indeed reaching North Akron for Christ, one child and family at a time.
You may wish to learn more about the UV Christmas Store as a possible opportunity to serve in the name of Christ next year.  If so, please go to their website at:

Thanksgiving Baskets: An Outpouring of God's Love

The Christ Community Chapel Thanksgiving basket initiative surpassed its goal of having members donate 700 baskets of food to the needy this year. The effort, which had a goal of 40 baskets in its original year, is geared toward providing enough food in one basket to serve 10 people a substantial Thanksgiving dinner. On that basis, CCC had the ambitious goal in 2012 of feeding roughly 7,000 people in need in the name of our Savior. With each basket containing approximately $40.00-$50 worth of food, CCC members donated in excess of $28,000, showing an expression of God’s love to the less fortunate. By Sunday, November 11th, church members had already passed the goal of donating 700 baskets.  Amazingly, the final count of baskets donated was 949!
On Monday, November 19th, basket collection from CCC members, and redistribution to the needy through the church’s local outreach partners took place. An energetic army of 50 volunteers, which consisted primarily of youth from the church, but also included folks of all ages, set about moving baskets from donors to staging locations for pickup by Local Outreach ministry partners.  Volunteers also organized and packed contents into the baskets (actually, the containers were large storage tubs) for delivery. In line with CCC’s desire to “lead with the Gospel”, each basket contained a New Testament.

While the major focus was on providing for neighbors through our Local Outreach ministry partners, over 100 baskets were also shipped to the East Coast. Additionally, 171 frozen turkeys were designated to be shipped to families in New Jersey suffering from the impact of super storm Sandy.
Members of our pastoral staff, including Joe Coffey and Mark Lile, watched in wonder as volunteers handled the logistical challenges of organizing, packing and moving the church’s tidal wave of donated food to neighbors in need. Others, sensing a special move of Christ’s hands and feet, snapped pictures of the work in progress.
Once again, God’s people at CCC have proven to be ordinary people engaged in an extraordinary work of God. If you were part of this move of cheerful, copious generosity, thanks for your kingdom-work!  If you missed this opportunity, please prayerfully be on the alert for opportunities for CCC members to be a blessing for others, through upcoming initiatives like “You’ve been gifted”.
The Lord loves a cheerful giver. And it is great to see the cheerful generosity of the Lord’s family in action at the Thanksgiving basket distribution. To God be the glory!

Celebrating with South Street Ministries

South Street Ministries Celebrates 15 Years of Partnering
for Christian Community Redevelopment

Christ Community Chapel local ministry partner South Street Ministries recently celebrated its 15thanniversary. South Street Ministries defines themselves as  “unlikely partners taking shared risks to renew our community for Christ’s sake.” Since founders Duane and Lisa Crabbs walked away from his steady career as a fireman 15 years ago to live in the inner city, help neighbors in need with re-development of the area, and share Christ to one and all, much has happened through unlikely partners in south Akron.

Georgia residents Robert Lupton and his wife were an inspiration to Duane and Lisa. Robert felt a calling some years ago to move into the inner city of Atlanta.  Lupton felt that if effective Christian ministry were going to take place, it would require knowing and understanding the people of the community firsthand. Much as Christ decided to “give up, go to and be with” men and women in need of a Savior, the Luptons moved into the inner city.
The Luptons have been used mightily by Christ for community development in Atlanta. They have leveraged the skills (e.g.: doing real estate deals, construction rehab for affordable housing for the poor) of people they know to help local community members renew their areas. This model of relocation prompted Duane and Lisa to do the same here in northeastern Ohio.

When the Crabbs first moved into their house in south Akron, they met a local mailman who had come to know Christ in 1991. This former cocaine dealer had been praying for a ministry partner to come into the area. Little did he expect a white couple relocating from Cuyahoga Falls to be the answer to prayer! However, these unlikely partners devoted themselves to learning about the people in the community, their abilities, their challenges, and needs.
This ministry from the position of knowing and understanding the community has had a major impact in Akron, and the state.  South Street provides after school homework assistance, open gym, Bike Shop, urban gardens, community worship and other services to enrich the lives of neighbors in need. Consistent with Christian community development goals, South Street seeks to  empower neighbors in need with a “hand up”, rather than making them dependent with “hand-outs.”

When South Street celebrated its 15th anniversary on March 9th, Robert Lupton, founder of Focused Community Strategies, a nationally known Christian community development organization, served as the primary speaker. Lupton celebrated the dedication of the Crabbs and the South Street staff, while advising the audience, “If it’s a calling (to move to the inner city), you can’t resist it.” However, after building a new home in the inner city, Lupton discovered that gentrification (the trend of higher income folks moving into the city) all too often drove up property values. This in turn drove up the rent the poor had to pay to continue living in their communities. In many cases, the poor were forced to relocate. The injustice of this caused Lupton to marshal resources to build mixed income housing projects. Local poor people teamed with architects, lawyers and land developers toward this “gentrification with justice” vision. In Lupton’s view, when marketplace gifts are used for justice ministry, they are akin to spiritual gifts.
Lupton reminds us that the Bible’s early settings are rural, but that the setting becomes increasingly urban as seen in the book of Revelation. The culmination of God’s redemptive plan is seen in the City of Our God. Robert Lupton asserts that every talent it takes to run a city will be needed in the Heavenly City. He encourages us to think of the earthly shift toward urbanization as “a trial run for our job descriptions in the City of God.”

Toward the end of the South Street 15th anniversary celebration, Joe Tucker, Executive Director of South Street Ministries, stressed that young people are moving back into cities with a sense of mission. They see gentrification with justice as key to Christian urban re-development. Joe and his wife are also celebrating their recent purchase of a home in the south Akron area. Joe encouraged audience members to also take a shared risk for the good of the city, declaring, “We need your spiritual and marketplace gifts.”
The family of God is indeed diverse in terms of race, culture, economic background and skills and professions. This makes for “unlikely partners,” as South Street staffers say. However, through ordinary people of different backgrounds that are united in Christ, God can do great things for the renewal of the city.

God working through His family: Restoration Alive Service launch

Christ Community Chapel’s new campus at Cuyahoga Hills Youth Detention Center celebrated its first worship service, the Restoration Alive Service, Wednesday, February 8th.  Members of CCC’s existing campuses are excited to welcome the facility staff and residents to their family.

However, existing members were not the only ones excited about the launch. The service was attended by 80 facility residents, or about half of its total population. This far exceeded CCC’s expectations, since the service is competing with other activities for the men’s free time. Overall, there were 115 attending the service, counting the men, facility staff, guards and CCC volunteers.
During the first Restoration Alive Service, CCC’s lead pastor Joe Coffey presented the message from 1 Peter on how Christians, the family of God, are to respond to conflict. Pastor Joe highlighted in his sermon that as Christians, we are all part of the family of Christ. This thought likely resonated with the men, many of whom do not have families to support them in their struggles. CCC’s Jim Bossler led the worship music, and Pastor Marshall Brandon hosted the service and prayed for the men at the end. Pastor Nate Hunter helped organize the CCC volunteers, and facilitated the time of fellowship after the service.

God’s work was evident not only in the attendance, but also in the response. One man received Jesus as Savior at the end of the service, and several others had questions, indicating that God’s Spirit was doing great things through His “ordinary” family members!

A new year brings a new CCC venue: Restoration Chapel Alive!

God’s Family: God’s power doing great things through ordinary people

God’s family at Christ Community Chapel is embarking on a great spiritual adventure with the upcoming launch of our new venue at the Cuyahoga Hills Juvenile Detention Center in Highland Hills,  Ohio.  To date, 67 (and counting!) volunteers from CCC have signed up to step out of their comfort zones and help with this ministry. Could God be calling you to carry His Gospel to the facility’s 160 young men? Most volunteers are grouped into four teams, each of which will take turns one week a month to minister.

At a recent launch team meeting, CCC’s Duncan Othen, a veteran of 10 years’ ministry to incarcerated people, acknowledged that the volunteers may feel unease the first time they enter the facility and hear the doors slam behind them. Such concern is natural. However, Duncan encouraged the team to “be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the LORD!” (Psalm 36:24) He also reminded the team, “there is no such thing as a ‘hopeless case’ in God’s sight.” Indeed, when believers walk by faith in the Spirit, all things are possible. Duncan assured his fellow CCC servants, “you never know what seeds have been planted” in a young man’s life when you bring the Gospel, the truth that sets the captives free. The volunteers are called to plant the seeds, and the Spirit of God makes them sprout and grow supernaturally.

Michael Ammirati of CCC’s Local Outreach team outlined the time line for the first phase of the ministry. This consists of bringing Christ into the center through excellence in a worship service. Since the Wednesday night services will compete with other potential uses of the residents’ free time, the music will be compelling and strong. On February 1, a four-hour training session for volunteers interested in participating in this ministry will take place with  Chaplain Clark on the Hudson Campus from 5:30 to 9:30 (contact Michael Ammirati if interested in attending).  On February 6th, there will be another team meeting, followed by the February 8th launch of the “Restoration Chapel Alive” worship service.  The service will consist of live worship music and a sermon from Pastor Joe who will bring God's word to the men, and a time for small group interaction between the volunteers and the men who attend; Pastor Marshall  Brandon will be hosting the first service.  For the second phase of the ministry, Bible studies and skills training and one-on-one mentoring  will be offered.

This ministry will be the first of its kind in a State Correctional Facility, in that CCC teams will bring worship equipment into the facility, and leave it set up. This will be a visible reminder that Christ Community Chapel has a vision to bring Christ to those who cannot go to a church. Our CCC leaders are praying that with time, the State will see a supernatural transformation in the detention center residents. The ultimate fulfillment of this vision would be for this ministry to be a template for detention centers State-wide.

God’s family at Christ Community Chapel has been called to be instruments of a “God-sized” miracle in Ohio. Please pray that God’s Spirit and power would move through our volunteers, who seek to love these young men as God does. Please also prayerfully consider whether God might be calling you to volunteer in this ministry.

It’s true. We are but earthen vessels, ordinary, weak and fragile in our humanity. However, when such vessels contain the all-surpassing power of God, we should expect God’s family to be part of something truly great!

To volunteer, or for more information, please contact

Urban Vision: Immediate Serving Opportunities

CCC Local Outreach ministry partner Urban Vision has a couple of great opportunities for our members to do justice and love mercy by helping at risk children in Akron’s North Hill area.  Both opportunities are geared toward helping our young neighbors in need succeed academically, and giving them a vision for a brighter future, just as the Lord says, “…I have a plan for you….to give you a future and a hope.” (Jer. 29:11)
A “most important” volunteer need at Urban Vision is for Kids’ Club helpers. Key to this role is to love a bunch of really cute kids as God their Father loves them. The children range in age from 4 years old through 8th grade. Helper volunteers lead teams and enjoy their time being with the kids. To qualify, volunteers must be at least 12 years old, and must have completed the 6th grade. Helpers are needed on Fridays from 3:30 to 6:30 PM during the school year.

Urban Vision also has openings for volunteers to be Set On Success Homework Helpers.  Volunteers help kids in kindergarten through 8th grade with homework on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5:00 to 6:00 PM during the school year. Specifically, much of the time is spent helping the students with math, listening to them read, or lending a hand with homework in other subjects. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old, and must have completed the 8th grade.
To volunteer please contact one of the following people:
Nathan@urbanvisionministry.org or call the office 330.762.1163. If you contact Urban Vision directly, please let them know you heard about the opportunity through Christ Community Chapel’s Local Outreach blog.
And what does the Lord require of you? To do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.  Micah 6:8
